I love ANC headphones a lot and I think there's still a major problem that most headphones need to solve. So let's check it out. So today's headphones were sent over to me by Halo for a review and although these were sent over to me, this is not a sponsored post and this review as usual will be based on my honest and biased opinion. So today's headphones were sent over to me by Halo for a review and although these were sent over to me, this is not a sponsored post and this review as usual will be based on my honest and biased opinion.
The S35 ANC retails for a pretty budget-friendly $60 US dollar, which in comparison to many flagship ANC headphones such as the Sony XM5 is honestly quite a steal. You won't get comparable quality to flagships from Sony but this is honestly quite a good pair of headphones. So if you're interested in getting these headphones, do check out my links in the description below. So the color that I got here is the off-white color and you can also choose from black and another orange-purple color. I feel the quality of these headphones is extremely high quality and it's also on par with the build quality of the previous gen XM4 headphones.
So the headphones here is solid, the stretch is very firm, there are no sharp edges along the sides here and everything just feels really nice with these headphones. So the headphones design here is very clean and minimal and Halo calls it a Nordic design and yeah, I think you can see the resemblance here. And everything here is pastel, soft color design, practical left and right indicators inside, overall a very simple look. So at the top of the headband, you're not getting any branding there which is good because you're using a headphone and you don't really need to keep reminding others what you're using.
You also get a soft spongy headband which is comfy to wear but not so much memory foam. The extension legs are nice and clicky with a metal plate inside so you're not getting modern arms like the XM5 here but as long as it works and functions well, I think it's good. So down to the earcups arm here, you're going to get a swivel arm, a folding arm as well as a tilting arm so that it will fit your head very nicely. And the earcups here, this is also where you're going to get the H logo which is really the only branding that you can see on these entire headphones.
So the microphone grille here is also really nicely integrated in a silver grille here and another thing that I think is cool is the hidden compliance text inside the headphone arm here which is really nice and subtle so you don't see it anywhere else on the headphones. So here you're also going to get a memory foam earcup that is soft but still have one issue which is the major issue with most headphones out there and at least for us that lives around the equator which is heat.
So using this leatherette earcups do get hot after a while and using it in an air-conditioned room is pretty okay but if you're using it out and about, get ready to sweat a lot. So the right earcups also houses all the controls and I like that Halo uses minimal buttons to do multiple different controls which is cool. So starting from the top here is your ANC function button so pressing it once will toggle between the different ANC modes. Triple tap it and you'll call your assistant. The next button here is also cool so press it once and it will increase your volume and to decrease the volume you press and hold it.
So one button to control the volume. As for the power button at the bottom here, press once and you can play or pause your media, press twice to skip forward and press three times to skip backwards. So there is also a hidden button on this which is on the touch surface sensor on the right earcups itself and if you double tap here it will enter or exit gaming mode which is super cool. So at the bottom here is also a 3. 5mm port here to connect your headphones to your PC or Mac and this is also the only way to enable the hi-res audio capabilities.
So next to that is the Type-C charging port to charge up the headphones. So battery life on these headphones is really good and without ANC you're gonna get a whopping 60 hours of playback time and with ANC you're still gonna get a respectable 40 hours of playback time which is more than enough for any flights that you're gonna take. So there isn't any quick charging on these headphones which is a missed opportunity in my opinion and charging the headphones from empty takes 2. 5 hours which is not the fastest in my opinion. There are two types of volumes you can expect from these headphones.
One is in its wired configuration and one in Bluetooth. So testing this on a Windows or Mac laptop, volume is very good and I get a comfortable volume at only 10% but the jump every 2% is very noticeable. For me at 30% is already really loud and there's still so much power that you can drive from these headphones. In the Bluetooth configuration, things are really different and I only get to a comfortable listening volume at 70% which is quite soft in my opinion and I can even listen at 100% with no problems albeit not for a long time. So that's something for you to consider.
Not sure why it's so soft when connected to Bluetooth but that's what it is. So feature here is pretty good and for starters, you get a Bluetooth 5. 2 chipset that supports both the AAC and SBC codec. Do be careful when you're buying these headphones and don't jump into it just because you see the Hi-Rez logo there because these are Hi-Rez Audio Certified and not Hi-Rez Audio Wireless. So there is no LDAC or any Hi-Rez codecs here. So this headphones also comes with an IPX4 water resistant rating which would survive sweating and water splashes with no problems. Also note that in the cable mode, there are a few things that don't work.
So ANC doesn't work in wired mode, controls doesn't work in wired mode and also the mic doesn't work. So this is something to take note of. There is also a nice two-device multiplying connectivity on these headphones so you can connect it to your computer and phone via Bluetooth and swap between them. So the app that we see in these headphones is very straightforward. On the status page, you get to see your battery percentage of the headphones and at the bottom, you get to toggle between ANC on, off or transparency mode.
So under the sound, you're going to get 5 EQ to choose from and there is something called a sound market that doesn't require you to pay for any EQs but you do get 4 extra sound EQs to play around with. So finally, at the last page, this is where you get to toggle your gaming mode on or off, find your headphones, update your firmware and that's pretty much it. So the ANC performance on the S-Certified ANC is not mind-boggling good but it gives you just enough performance that when you listen to media loud enough, it does mask off surrounding noises.
So in the low humming noise test such as road noise or airplane cabin noise test mode, for the most part, you still will hear quite an audible hum in ANC mode but when you have your volume slightly above comfortable volume, it will mask off the sound. So I find less effectiveness in the noisy cafe test where you will still hear a lot of those variable noises coming through. With loud music, it will mask those noises but it's not the ideal way of using an ANC headphone. Transparency mode is decent and you do get a slight amplification so you can hear announcements.
Finally, in high wind situations, you do get quite a bit of wind buffering through. It would be good if there is an anti-noise algorithm. So with that, I give the S-Certified ANC a mediocre ANC performance of 7. 2 out of 10. In general, the sound quality of the S-Certified ANC is very good starting with the Bluetooth connectivity which in the case of the iPhone, you do get to enjoy AAC codec for higher quality streams. So bass in general is very satisfying and I think this headphone is tuned well to give you that very powerful sub bass rumble and it also hits the mid-bass exactly right which is very nice.
Vocals and highs is very well defined with Bluetooth. Mind you that there is no hi-res audio here and for the most part, with good quality streams, you're gonna get very nice sound quality. Great vocal reproductions and the highs are really crisp and clear. So plugging this into your laptop and running this in the hi-res audio configuration adds a lot of details and sparkles to the song. Everything sounds a lot brighter, feels cleaner and higher resolution. However, do take note that in the hi-res audio configuration, you get substantially flatter bass as compared to the bass performance over Bluetooth.
Everything feels a lot flatter and on the same plane, bass is still quality bass but it doesn't rumble as deep. So this was tested on the M1 Pro MacBook Pro with pretty decent sound card in my opinion and when I plugged it into my Windows laptop which came with pretty modern specs with a 12th gen i7, sounded pretty normal to be honest and since the lack of dedicated sound card in my Windows laptop made it sound not as good and not hi-res. So you really need to take note of the nitty-gritty stuff here.
Sometimes it doesn't mean that there's hi-res audio batch on the box and you will be getting good audio out of the box. So this is a test to see if the Halo S35 ANC is a good headphone for making phone calls. So this is me speaking in a relatively quiet environment and this is the call quality that you can expect. So what I'm going to do now is turn on a simulated background noise so you can hear a difference. So now there's a simulated background noise. So what did you need the call for? So although there is a gaming mode, you're not going to get performance like a wired headphone does.
Of course if you're using this plug-in, there is no latency but via Bluetooth even in gaming mode sees a tiny amount of latency. With movies and videos, it is not as noticeable. Anyways, let's take a look at the latency performance of these headphones. So overall, a fantastic pair of headphones at a great value. Be sure to know your requirements for hi-res audio and whether or not your computer or phone supports hi-res audio when plugged in. If not, you might not be extracting the best out of these headphones. For me, another downside of these headphones is that there's no case that comes in the box.
So you just have to chuck it in your bag and that's not really nice. So that is it for this review. If you find this video helpful, smash the thumbs up button and share this video everywhere. If you haven't yet subscribed, do consider subscribing and I'll see you in the next video. .
