Alright, so I spent this last week testing the $249 Ledger Flex and I can confidently say that there's nothing else like it on the market It really is the iPhone of the hardware wall industry But with all the concerns many of us have about Ledger's products and about their security myself included I knew I had to dig a lot deeper for this review.
So along with my own testing and hours of research I even jumped on a call with Ledger to discuss the Flex's security and all of its unique features that you won't find on any Other hardware wallet except for maybe the Ledger stacks, of course, but in this video I'm going to lay all out on the line to finally answer the question Can we trust Ledger again and would I recommend the Ledger Flex? Let's get into it real quick I also want to let you know that Ledger is offering our community the best price on the Ledger Flex Along with the sweet deal.
So for a limited time if you use a link in the description to order your Ledger Flex You'll also get $10 worth of free Bitcoin. So definitely take advantage of that.
Alright first Let's see what we get when unboxing the Ledger Flex the back of the box has security tear away tabs inside It's a nice clean presentation with the Ledger Flex front and center We also have our recovery sheets for writing down our seed phrase We have the Ledger user guide and the USB-C to USB-C cable now One of the most noticeable upgrades to the Ledger Flex compared to past Ledger models like the Ledger Nano X and the Ledger Nano S Plus is its design the Flex has several unique design components You won't find on any other hardware wall that affect both its usability and security at first glance.
It's nothing crazy, right? It has an aluminum frame with a plastic back cover It has these smooth rounded corners on top and sharper corners on the bottom.
It feels really good in hand and it's almost the perfect size It's a bit shorter than a bank card and it's not too thick either and then you get to the screen It looks normal until you turn it on only then do you realize that it's far from a normal screen? In fact, the screen on the Flex has never been used on any piece of tech before and I know what you're thinking It looks like the screen on a Kindle, but it's not so this is a black and white e-ink touchscreen with 16 shades of gray Many e-ink screens are made of glass so they're prone to cracking and they're a bit heavier But the Flex uses the world's first organic TFT e-ink display, which is really just a fancy name for organic plastic That's more environmentally friendly to make and more durable than a standard e-ink screen.
It's also a lot more expensive What's really cool about e-ink screens is that the screen is always on even when the device is turned off and this doesn't drain Any extra battery power and one of the best things about this screen is that it reads like paper. So even in direct sunlight There's basically no glare I can see this green perfectly fine when I'm outside and it really does look like I'm staring at a digital piece of paper But the screen isn't perfect.
There is one issue I have with it Especially if you're someone who likes using their hardware wallet in the dark Which I don't know anyone who uses their hardware wallet in the dark But it doesn't mean those people don't exist and that problem is this screen does not have a backlight So while it performs exceptionally well in well lit areas, it doesn't perform at all in complete darkness on the bright side No pun intended.
You can still read the screen perfectly fine if dim lamp is turned on or just in a dimmer lit area But if you're in complete darkness, you won't be able to see your screen The good thing about having no backlight is that the battery lasts a really long time when I first unbox this and turn it on It was at 60% and I've been using it for a week straight Literally testing it every single day for at least 30 minutes a day and the battery is still at 23% and I have not charged it The screen sensitivity is also on point which is a good thing because the buttons on the flex are pretty small Especially if you're entering your seed phrase or something that prompts the full keypad So if you got sausage fingers like me having a responsive and accurate screen is a must Another thing I really like about the flex is a little sounds that it makes when you interact with the screen Some of them remind me of the older handheld gaming systems like the Gameboy giving it a bit of a nostalgic feel But the design is just one aspect that sets the flex apart from its competition The other and arguably more crucial aspect is its security and it does have all the standard security features that you would expect from A flagship hardware wallet along with some really unique features that you won't find in any other hardware wallet But ledger is taking it a step further and they have made a device that we can use to secure our digital accounts even outside of crypto So the screen actually plays a crucial role in the overall security of the ledger flex So aside from being the first ever organic eating touchscreen ledger has implemented the first ever what they're calling Secure touchscreen the screen on the flex is powered directly by an eal 6 plus secure element chip Which has never been done before in the hardware wallet industry Which is the same chip used to secure billions of credit cards around the world It's proven technology that's been tested over decades and billions of secure payment applications Ensuring that it will secure any sensitive data that we store on our flex So this chip that's designed specifically to be secure handles everything that our hardware wallet does from generating and storing our private key to Cryptographic operations like approving transactions So by connecting the secure element chip to the touchscreen this eliminates any chance of malware being injected and ensures no one can intercept any Data that's being communicated between the secure element and the screen whereas other hardware wallets use a microcontroller Which is basically a small computer the same kind that's used in your TV remote or your toaster Between the secure element chip and the touchscreen which theoretically leaves a gap for something malicious to slip in so ledger took a chip That's designed strictly for security not performance and still managed to create a really good user experience with the flex So it's definitely impressive I'll give them that but using this level of secure element chip also means that ledger will likely never be 100% open source which is the case for any hardware wallet that uses an eal certified chip But despite all the FUD on the internet ledger is actually already 95% open source And this includes ledger live the wallet API the secure SDK all the applications that run on ledger devices Ledger's operating system and the implementation of ledger recover But the secure element chip used in all ledger devices will likely never be 100% open source because it's not created by ledger It's manufactured by another company who has spent 40 plus years and billions of dollars creating the secure chip So it makes sense that they wouldn't want to share the code with the public on the flip side any secure element with an eal Certification such as the one used in the flex has undergone third-party security evaluation So the security of these chips is not just a claim, but it's verified by experts Let's say ledger or any other hardware wallet manufacturer for that matter did open source the secure element chip Not only would they be in a ton of legal trouble because they sign NDAs when they use these chips But they would reveal detailed information about how the chip works Its security measures and how these measures are implemented which would create a huge vulnerability in these devices So while open sourcing some components can be very beneficial Open-sourcing something as crucial as a secure element would pose a serious threat to the security of our device and not only that but the Entire payment solution industry because again this chip is not only used in our hardware wallets But also in other things like our bank cards and electronic passports another notable security feature offered by the flex is called secure signing Which effectively eliminates blind signing which often leads to people getting scammed most blind signing scams try to convince you to sign a malicious transaction and improve a malicious smart contract function that grants the Scammer access to an asset in your wallet So before you sign a transaction more often than not you'll be shown the full details of your transactions such as which assets you're transferring And who you're transferring them to on top of these security features the flex also provides all your standard security features or at least what? I consider standard so a 24 word seed phrase the option to set up a pass phrase Or hidden wallet and a user generated pin which keeps others out of your device something that stood out to me That was the pin is actually pretty short You can only make it four to eight digits Which is shorter than some other wallets that allow longer pins up to 50 digits But the number of allowed attempts is much lower So if you enter the wrong pin three times in a row The wallet will wipe itself clean and you'll need your seed phrase to regain access to your crypto But one of my favorite security features of flex offers that isn't directly related to crypto is the ability to secure your digital Accounts such as Facebook gmail x Dropbox basically any platform that supports UTF or universal two-factor authentication this is achieved using ledger security key app which is an app designed by ledger So once you download it onto your flex You can use your flex and tap it to your phone using NFC for secure logins or plug it in your computer with the USB C Cable for desktop use considering all its features of flex is one of the most secure hardware wallets money can buy that said it doesn't Matter how secure it is if it's not easy to use so during my testing I took it with me literally everywhere I went I just tossed it in my pocket.
I walked down in the river and messed around with it I walked around town and used it and I found it to be one of the most user-friendly hardware wallets I've tested even when I'm not sitting at my desk the problem with a lot of hardware walls that offer a lot of security features Is that they're usually not the most user-friendly or they're best used as a desktop only device and even some walls I claim to work on both mobile and desktop devices such as the one key Pro that I recently reviewed can feel a bit Incomplete at times because you thought you could do everything on your phone But then you run into a situation where you have to connect it to your computer when you don't want to use your computer And it just feels like an unfinished product with the flex on the ledger live app.
It's a much more seamless experience I don't feel like I'm waiting around for an update so that I can enjoy the Wallace full capabilities They've actually delivered a complete product Which I would hope would be the case considering they've been working on both the flex and the stacks for about three years now For example when I had to update the firmware on my flex, I didn't even have to plug it into my computer I just started the download on the ledger live app on my phone approved the update on the flex and within a couple of minutes My firmware was up to date.
So the flex is really compatible It will work with your Mac Windows and Linux desktop device or your iOS and Android mobile devices using the ledger live app Plus everything you'd want to do with your hardware while it can be done directly in the ledger live app including buying selling and swapping crypto and Staking various coins like ETH soul a da dot and a bunch of other coins something that's kind of a bummer with the ledger flex Is its storage capacity with just over one megabyte of storage and the storage? Determines how many apps you can download on your ledger flex and each app ranges from two to over a hundred kilobytes So you can technically download up to 100 apps But more realistically if you're using more popular blockchains like aetherium and Bitcoin which take more data You're going to be able to download maybe 10 to 20 apps Fortunately your devices storage capacity doesn't determine how much crypto you can hold you can easily install and uninstall apps Using ledger live without having to worry about losing your crypto something I always like to cover in my reviews is the wallet setup process to highlight how easy or difficult it is to set up a wallet And most hardware walls are pretty straightforward But ledger has made it even easier with helpful notes that explain what you're doing and why you're doing it during the setup So not only has ledger made it so the flex walks you through these setup process But they took it a step further by empowering the user with knowledge so they understand exactly what it is They're doing and why they're doing it.
So let's quickly set up the ledger flex All right, so I'm going to set up my flex using my mobile device. So to get started, we'll just power on the ledger flex And Then tap to continue So we have a couple options ledger live mobile ledger live desktop I'm going to use ledger live mobile and then we just need to scan this QR code with our mobile phone Only if you don't already have the ledger live app installed on your phone.
Alright, so I'm just going to open up the camera app Scan the QR code and this should take me to Ledger's website Which is really just going to redirect me back to the app store where I can download ledger live I've already had it downloaded once before on my phone, but for the sake of this video I am going to download it again Alright, once it's downloaded open up the ledger live app and we're going to use ledger live in conjunction with our ledger flex to set it up So we'll tap get started and we want to set up our ledger because this is a new device we're going to choose the ledger flex and We're looking for the ledger flex right now, which is right here ledger flex 11 CA.
I'm going to tap that It's pairing now. I just need to confirm this pairing on my ledger device Make sure that the code here on ledger live matches with the code on my flex. Yes, they match and Now it's pairing tap pair on ledger live as well.
And there we go The ledger live is paired to my ledger wallet next We're going to go through the genuine check which just checks to make sure your ledger flex is an official ledger product And then also the update check which checks if your ledger flex operating system is up-to-date or not So let's go ahead and check the ledger flex as you can see it says ledger genuine check and We need to allow a secure connection with ledger on our flex device And as you can see ledger flex is genuine and the operating system is up-to-date so we can continue to set up To start things off give your ledger flex a unique name.
So let's just name this one Alex And confirm name tap to continue now we can choose our four to eight digit pin code tap to continue Choose my pin Let's do something really tough like one two three four one two three four reconfirm the pin and now our pin is set Tap to continue Next choose how you like to set up this ledger flex. We'll tap to continue set up as a new ledger wallet This is if you want to generate a new seed phrase or tap restore if you have an existing seed phrase that you want To recover on the ledger flex.
I'm going to set it up as a new wallet and It's going to generate a secret recovery phrase for this device and it only generates a 24 word seed phrase You don't have the option to choose a 12 or 18 The 24 word phrase is the standard default phrase for the ledger flex so just make sure you're reading through these notes as you go through the setup process and Never take pictures of your phrase, of course yada yada And now we want to write down our 24 word seed phrase so that we can confirm it here in a second So once you recorded your 24 words, you do need to confirm that you wrote them down correctly So we'll just start the confirmation and then you need to select each word in the correct order to verify that you wrote it down correctly in trip And then it's confirming that we wrote down our seed phrase correctly.
It should only take a few seconds Seed recovery phrase confirmed And now we can continue setting up our device now need to go over to ledger live and it's asking do I want a digital backup? No, I personally don't I'm good with paper and I Understand and now we can install some crypto apps if you want to do that right now just for the sake I will install One of these apps and here you can see I now have the Bitcoin app on my ledger flex device And now it's going to install the aetherium app All right now that both of my apps are installed my ledger is all set up and I am ready to go now There are a couple options that are going to pop up immediately so we can transfer some crypto to our ledger device We could buy crypto something I really want to show you is customize the lock screen because this is one of my favorite features So if you have NFTs, you can add that to your lock screen and it'll be displayed even when your device is off But what I want to do is choose a picture from my phone here Got a lot of Pepe memes, but you know what I want to put my dog Daisy so I'm going to set this as a lock screen and again, this is an E ink gray touchscreen.
So if you have a colored picture, it's not going to be displayed in color obviously But it will be displayed in 16 different shades of gray. So to do this you need to unlock your device first That makes sense. So enter your PIN code and Then I will tap retry here on ledger live And then just tap load picture anytime you want to do something that'll change your device You have to approve it on your device and that's why it's a secure cold wallet as you can see here It's loading the picture on to the ledger flex device.
It only takes a few seconds I've never had it take longer than 30 seconds and then that looks super cute. So I'm just going to tap keep and It's all ready to go as far as all this other stuff.
You can just say I'll do this later or just exit out and Here we are in the ledger live app now I do want to quickly walk you through all the features on the ledger flex device So if you just go to settings you can change your name under name If you tap about ledger device, you can see your current OS version the hardware version your serial number and a bunch of other stuff We don't really care about you can also customize your lock screen.
So this will be your picture you can also enable or disable auto lock as well as the time that it takes to activate auto lock and Then if you don't like the sounds I don't know how you couldn't but if you don't like the sounds that the ledger flex Produces you can turn off notification sounds as well as the tap sounds. I'm going to leave mine on You can of course change the language on your ledger device. You'll have to do that using ledger live And if we go over here, you can change your pin You can enable or disable Bluetooth.
You can also remove Bluetooth pairings You can enable or disable NFC You don't need it enabled if you don't plan on using the ledger security key But if you do want to use that app, you'll definitely need that enabled and then here you can see your battery life I like to display the battery percentage just because why not you can also turn on or off the auto power off if you want To save battery it's always best to turn on this option and then there are some advanced features So if you want to set a passphrase or a hidden wallet you would go here and You can set your passphrase and attach it to a pin or you can set a temporary passphrase Oh You can also set up pin shuffle.
So this is where it's not going to be in order whenever you Will just turn it on and see here. No, I just turned it off But basically it won't be in chronological order in that way No one can learn your pin code if they're watching you enter it and then you can get ledger live So this is basically just that QR code that we scan earlier or you can completely factor you reset your device or uninstall all the apps Under the reset option something.
I know I can't avoid talking about is a ledger recover program often referred to as the ledger backdoor So I want to clear up some confusion about this service and that's the thing.
This is a service It's not a backdoor by definition a backdoor is a method or pathway Usually secret that allows someone to bypass normal authentication and security controls Ledger recover is not that it cannot bypass your wallet security If you want to use ledger recover you have to go through the entire setup process Which is pretty in-depth that it includes KYC as well as setting up a payment method because it is a subscription based service and Similar to a transaction you have to approve it on your ledger device If you don't set it up The recover service will never have access to your private key or any other data about your wallet and to be clear all hardware wallets Have access to your private key whenever you sign a transaction on a blockchain Your wallet is accessing the private key to create a digital signature The important thing is that the private key stays in a secure element in your device That is unless you sign up for ledger recover approve it on your device and then it will encrypt your private key Split it into different shards and send it to three different custodians.
So what I recommend the ledger flex for $250 this is the best the most premium hardware wallet on the market that you can buy. It's super innovative It has a bunch of different security features that are actually useful and it's one of the most user-friendly Harder wallets that can use on your desktop device or your mobile device. You could take it with you on the go So for $250, I think this is a no-brainer That said I'm going to be talking a lot more about ledger wallets and try to clear up some fun and answer some really important Questions on my new ledger wallet playlist. So definitely check that out. I'll see you there.
Peace out.
